Randall Anway, AIA, Owner of New Tapestry, LLC

Randall is a creative thinker who brings together art, design, and sustainability in his work. With a degree in fine arts and sculpture, followed by a master’s in architecture focusing on design methodology, Randall’s approach to architecture is shaped by both his artistic background and his deep interest in sustainable design.

Early in his career, Randall helped pioneer tools for managing buildings. Later, after a period in web development, he returned to architecture, earned his license, and worked with a design-build firm specializing in high-end residential projects.

One of Randall’s key passions is biomimetics—the study of nature’s models to inspire solutions for human challenges. He believes nature holds the keys to everything we need to know for more sustainable living patterns, and, with help from others, even busy professionals can learn from nature’s ability to adapt and innovate. Using these lessons to facilitate reshaping the built environment bio-regionally in ways that can be more sustainable and in tune with our terrestrial heritage, his guiding question is: “What can nature teach us about creating tomorrow’s history today?”

Randall advocates for a holistic, systems-oriented approach to tackling complex challenges like climate change. He encourages rediscovering the curiosity we had as children, maintaining an openness to better understanding the emerging changes in the world around us, and learning to dream again. In his current role, Randall collaborates with architects and engineers, leveraging value-sensitive design, futures thinking, and emerging technologies to forge new pathways for sustainable innovation.

At the same time, Randall emphasizes that sustainable innovation must balance creativity with practicality. He challenges conventional thinking in architecture, striving to re-imagine design scenarios that not only push boundaries but are also grounded in a positive outlook for people and planet. For Randall, future sustainability lies in combining the wisdom of nature with the ingenuity of human innovation.
