With an architectural background spanning the US and Europe, Monica brings a thoughtful perspective on how architecture shapes lives and communities. Her diverse personal and professional trajectory brings a very unique approach to design and environmental challenges.
When asked about sustainability, she always emphasizes the importance of being proactive versus reactive. With a focus on the bigger picture, Monica views the connection between nature and design as fundamental—not only for enhancing spaces but for enriching communities and improving lives. While some may think of architecture as just buildings, for her, architecture and design are mostly about life and connection.
She believes that communication and education are essential for understanding ever-changing environmental needs and broadening opportunities.
At edmSTUDIO, her initiatives include the development of STUDIO sustainability guidelines, a STUDIO materials red list, and three-dimensional graphics for embodied carbon to facilitate dialogue and help stakeholders make more informed decisions (see the DCAMM embodied carbon example pictured right).
Currently, she is involved in the Evergreens Carriage House project at the Emily Dickinson Museum, a Passive House project. Scheduled for completion in 2025, this will be the first Passive House building at Amherst College, blending history with pioneering sustainable design.
