With a background rooted in physics and chemistry, combined with a master’s degree in landscape architecture, Maciej has seamlessly transitioned into the realm of building science. He has worked at New Ecology for nearly 11 years, where he currently directs sustainability initiatives across various building sectors, particularly at state and local levels, with a significant focus on affordable housing.
As Director of Building Technologies, Maciej leads both internal and external training programs, covering topics including building assemblies, vapor dynamics, the complexities of reading and organizing construction drawings, affordable housing policies, and energy codes. His efforts extend beyond New Ecology, as demonstrated by a recent grant application to the EPA aimed at promoting environmental education in secondary and graduate programs at local universities and colleges. Additionally, Maciej provides specialized training to general contractors on building science, passive house construction, and compliance with the latest energy codes in Massachusetts.
One of Maciej’s notable achievements is the completion of a Passive House certified, LEED Platinum building—The Homes at Anne M. Lynch at Old Colony Phase Three C, a 55-unit multifamily housing project in downtown Boston. This project earned a PHIUS design award for affordable housing, driven by an integrated design process and a collaborative construction approach. Multiple training sessions and frequent meetings were held to ensure a deep understanding of the project. Peer review sessions and detailed page-turns helped the team refine every design intent.
A key part of the project was the creation of a scaled mock-up of the building, which provided valuable hands-on experience for the team to address critical constructability issues. The focus during the mock-up phase was on essential sustainability components, such as air barrier installation, Z-girt attachment, insulation, and window detailing, rather than superficial design elements.
Through his attention to detail and commitment to an integrated design process, Maciej continues to advance sustainable building technologies.
