The Power of Perception in Design

Architectural Intern AJ Alessandrini recently built full-scale models of lighting fixtures for one of our projects. Mock-ups like these are extremely useful, offering a realistic sense of how elements fit within a space.

When assembling one of the fixtures in our office, it felt far too large for the intended space. But once it was placed on-site, it was perfect! So, how does this happen?

Perception plays a key role in how elements within a space come together. As humans, we process our environment through our senses, with visual perception—an intricate connection between the eyes and brain—shaping our emotions and physiological responses. Factors like ceiling height, room depth, natural light, and materials, combined with memory and expectations, all influence how we interpret environments.

The differences between the office and project site created two distinct perceptions of the same fixture. This highlights the importance of matching future project conditions to ensure our design choices are most appropriate.
