Blending Tradition with Innovation
When Sean was in high school, he already knew his future lay in the world of architecture. What he didn’t yet know was his career would be a dynamic blend of traditional craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology.
Sean’s interest in computers led him on an independent study path, where he explored technology in different mediums. He was fascinated by renders and 3D modeling, and among the available software, a program called Blender stood out. Sean figured out how to use it on his own and still uses it today.
In college, Sean encountered an unexpected challenge during his first semester at Roger Williams—the university insisted on hand sketches instead of computer-generated. They wanted students to learn how difficult it was to draw in general and to appreciate the basic skills of drafting. But Sean’s perspective shifted during this time. “I went into school loving technology, but gained respect for traditional ways of hand sketching and modeling. This led me to the realization that everything you do should have a purpose. There should be meaning behind why you do something,” he said.
Sean took the lead in introducing different programs among his peers. He watched YouTube videos and explored different technologies in his spare time, going beyond the classroom and taking the initiative to learn outside of school. Using new tools helped him streamline processes and achieve different, and sometimes unexpected, results.
As he delved into his thesis (pictured right), Sean felt he had come full circle—his thesis was a combination of his interest in technology and more traditional design means. Instead of simply rendering something at ease with traditional softwares, he took a more hand-drawn and collage-like approach that, while more difficult, allowed him to think critically and with purpose.
When Sean joined edmSTUDIO, he was excited to introduce the use of drone technology, a first for the firm. Fascinated by how we can use 3D scanning and photogrammetry with the drone footage, Sean sees the potential for revolutionizing the way existing conditions are documented, fostering more accurate and efficient practices in architecture.
One of Sean’s favorite projects at edmSTUDIO has been helping with the design of the firm’s new website. “I’m an architectural designer, but that doesn’t mean I just design buildings. I loved creating a website for a firm where I feel part of the family,” he said.
A unique narrative is taking shape—a story of innovation and tradition, creatively woven together. “The journey continues,” he says, “and I’m eager to continue learning from those around me, and also continue sharing my love for technology.”
